Reviews
“Black, White, Brown, male, female, young, old - “Too Pretty for a Black Girl” is a book for everyone who has ever experienced discrimination of any kind. Ms. Curry cuts to the heart of the matter of how what we hear affects us from birth to our last breath. She begins each chapter with a very profound quotation from people familiar to almost everyone - quotes that, hopefully, will make us all stop and think about what we are saying before we say it. Her story is a heartwarming lesson in history, in survival, and most of all in courage; the courage to tell it like it is. A well-written book with a heartfelt message, Aisha has successfully avoided the “poor me” route often taken in message books. This is a book that should be read by everyone with the idea that all of us can learn something from it.”

Pretty can be a loaded term. “Pretty for a Black Girl: Compliment or Insult?” are the reflections of Aisha Curry as she presents her own thoughts of ideas on the fate of young womankind of all races and creed. There’s an innate prejudice in all of us she writes, and the only way to overcome it is to face it head on. “Pretty for a Black Girl” is of recommended reading for any young woman who wants to be more than just a pretty face. - MidWest Book Review - in Oregon WI
Pretty for a Black Girl, I found it to be uplifting and very inspirational that any woman of color can relate to. We as “colored” women are often compared to lighter skin women as if our color defines us. This book touches on various situations that we all have experienced sometime in our lives. Being pretty and trying to live up to “societies standards” is another topic that is addressed as well. This is all a form of prejudice that the author wanted us to acknowledge. Whether we realize it or not we’re all guilty of this. Let’s put a stop to it! I really enjoyed reading this book and I hope you will as well.
